"Starting a Business from Scratch"
The pros of starting a business from scratch include being your own boss, maximizing your profit potential and controlling the destiny and direction of the business, but owning your own business is not completely perfect. You may face financial risks and long working hours. It also comes with a lot of responsibility. Success (and failure) is up to you.
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to own your own business, I'm sure there are days when you'd really like to turn the tables on your boss. Even if you have a great relationship with management, you probably have lots of your own ideas that you'd like to see implemented and when decisions come down from the top, are there a few times when you think, "I could do better?"
Owning your own business puts you in charge! Many business owners would probably be quick to tell you there can be a downside to owning your own business as well. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of starting a business from scratch.
The Pros of Starting a Business from Scratch
The number one reason people are interested in starting a business is that, as the business owner, you answer only to yourself. You're at the top of the food chain. There is no higher authority than you. You are the source of decisions, leadership, direction and vision for the company.
Owning your own business often provides much greater potential for profit. Although you may be well-paid as an employee, there is usually some kind of maximum or ceiling. There is virtually no limit for the business owner. The business owner controls all the profits, and if the business is sold, the owner takes home more than anybody.
If the business is successful, the owner is usually able to take most of the credit for that success. The business becomes closely associated with your name and personality. The success of the business is inseparable from your success.
Owning your own business gives you the chance to innovate. If you have fresh new ideas about how to run the business, being the owner gives you the opportunity to put them into practice. If those ideas pay off, you get the credit. In most cases, owning your own business lets you get involved in a variety of tasks. You can choose to concentrate on areas and tasks that you particularly enjoy.
In most cases, the business owner gets to set his working hours. In the beginning, those hours might be long, but as your business grows and succeeds, you have much more flexibility as an owner than you ever did as an employee.
Not only can you control your own hours, owning your own business gives you the chance to actually control your income. As an employee, your hours and your income are defined by someone else. However, if the owner wants to make more, he can choose to work harder and expand the business. Assuming the business is successful, the owner also has more job security than the typical employee. The owner is more aware of the course of the business, and is unlikely to be surprised by events like layoffs or even business failure.
The Cons of Starting Your Own Business
There are plenty of good reasons to starting your own business, but there are potential downsides as well. As the owner, it may be necessary to put in long hours and seven day work weeks, particularly if you're starting the business from scratch. Although your profit potential is good, your paycheck may not be a sure thing. When things are just starting out, or if the business is doing poorly, your pay could be variable, irregular or nonexistent.
Owning your own business may require a large financial investment. There's also the possibility that you may need to take a personal financial risk.
You may be attracted to the idea of owning your own business because you will be your own boss. Of course, this also means that if the business fails, there may be no one to blame but yourself. Owning your own business brings with it a high degree of responsibility, and along with that comes a high degree of stress.
Ultimately, everything will come down to a personal decision. Deciding if the pros of owning your own business outweigh the cons will depend on your passion, commitment and tolerance for risk. The rewards of business ownership are great. The real question is, do you have what it takes?
